Planning and Conducting Lessons

We are all familiar with classroom disciplinary problems since all teachers face it at some point or the other. It has been seen that teacher who fail to plan and design appropriate instructional tasks are the ones who mostly face such behaviours from students.

When the lesson plans lack variety and students rarely get the chance to discuss or evaluate the materials that they are learning; students face difficulty learning in the class.

Strong and consistent management, organisational skills and proper conduction of instructions lead to fewer classroom discipline problems. Proper planning and assessment of students are practises that make daily classroom activities easy and fun for students.

PLANNING:

The first step to establishing an effective learning and teaching environment is planning. A teacher can start by planning the classroom activities that he or she would carry out, beforehand. Certain classroom activities can include providing worksheets, checking classwork in the class, collecting questions from students, assigning independent work, planning tests for early finishers and many others. Appropriate assessment strategies such as, asking for student presentations, small group works, seatwork on previously presented materials would allow greater understanding and cooperative learning among the students.

MANAGEMENT:

Management, as I previously mentioned is one important factor while conducting an effective class.

Transition management:

The teacher needs to monitor the entire class performance by asking students questions to check their understanding. He or she should check students’ interpretation of provided content and provide solutions if students face problems.

Instructional management:

  • The teacher needs to have a plan and should be anticipating problems and provide new examples or demos. The teacher should incorporate enthusiasm in the lesson. It is very important that the students get encouraged to learn and complete lessons.
  • Providing a learning objective beforehand and then presenting the new content clearly with an outline or video for any complex lesson makes it easier for the students to learn.
  • Student comprehension should be checked before ending a day’s lesson and again proper assessment!

Managing group instructions:

The teacher should manage the lesson movement based on how fast or slow the students are being able to catch up on. When assigning group works the focus should be on encouraging each student’s performance in the group; they can be evaluated based on group performances, on participation format or on quicker responses. While encouraging students for group work, the teacher should also eliminate any sort of misbehaviour or overlapping.

If the teacher has proper set of plans and the instructions are quite clear then the students will follow them as often as possible hence promoting a more organised teaching atmosphere.
