Everyone has one dream or another in life. And one dream in common for most of us would be — what if I met a genie who would grant my wish?
Things like that have stopped happening a long time ago, since the Arabian Nights. But it happened with a little girl called Tushi!
Tushi had lost her parents early, had grown up with her grandfather (from her mother’s side). She loved her old relative very much and he loved her just as much. One thing she had gotten from him was a vial, taken out from inside a chest a hundred and who-knows-how-many years old. She believes that the vial contains happiness, that when it was opened, everyone will be happy.
After her grandfather also passed away, she was arranged to live with her uncle and aunt, and her young cousin, Topu. Topu had a little trouble speaking. He would stutter a little, normally, but when nervous, he would not be able to say anything properly. His mother's intimidating presence has always kept him nervous, so he could not get over this stammering of his.
One night, both Tushi's uncle and aunt called them to tell them that they might not come home that night. Tushi and Topu have to spend the night alone in the house. They get scared, and Tushi suggests that they open the vial. They open it and nothing more than a bit of smoke comes out. They get disappointed, go, and start cleaning the dishes, only to return after hearing a crash. They hesitantly enter the room and face someone with strange clothing and a sword!
Then that someone jumps and rushes towards them to frighten them— and collapses on the sofa instead, clutching his waist.
The ancient genie has a terrible back pain!
After Tushi and Topu are introduced with him. He tells them the short version of his name: Kabil bin Mugabali Mahindor Kohkafee! He says that he was imprisoned in that vial many years ago. Tushi tells him to grant their wish, as they have rescued him from the tiny prison. But Kabil has forgotten all his rhymes to perform magic, so it turns out that he is kind of useless as a genie.
But the next morning Topu's parents come home and the first thing his father does is to bump into Kabil! It turns out that Kabil is invisible to all but Tushi and Topu.
Then the fun begins.
Kabil starts following them to their school. There are so many things this ancient genie in modern T-shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and baseball cap does. How does the man in the street start jumping backwards all on his own? Why does the magnet in the science class attract the chalk and water? Who are the men pouring a sack of scorched rice on the floor of their living room?
Curious to know what happens to the genie and those two children, read Kabil Kohkafee, a wonderful book about this poor genie who even forgot how to fly!
