Have you ever wondered how your kids spend their time at school? Are they making many friends or getting into trouble or being bullied? Are they’re coping with the daily activities well enough? Here are some tips and questions you can ask to get your children to talk about their daily lives, whether it’s about school or other problems they might face and should share with you.
Start out simple. Ask what made them laugh at school. This will help your kid open up without any hesitation.- Ask something like, “When were you bored most, at school today?” This will give you an idea of how much your child pays attention in class.
- Something that will help your child to open up about most things is to ask open ended questions like “What are the things you did at school today that you enjoyed the most?” Avoid questions that have room for one word answers.
- This one is crucial. Ask your children, “If there was an alien invasion, who would you want the aliens to take with them?” This question can easily give you the idea if they are having problems with their classmates, playmates or even teachers or relatives.
- Ask your kid about what books they read in school or what writing tasks they had. This will help you keep track of their schoolwork.
- Tell your children to tell a story of their own. They are most likely to include the details of their day.
- Ask about the different times of the day they were the happiest or enjoyed themselves.
- Likewise, ask about when they were upset the most, or maybe bored.
- Ask questions that help your children expand their horizons, for example, “What subjects do you think they should teach at school?”
- Ask, “If you were the President of the country, what would you do?”
- Talk about your own day and in the process encourage them to talk about theirs as well.
- Ask them about where they would like to go for summer/winter vacations, or maybe even for the day.
- Ask if they would like to visit anyone in particular for the day.
- Ask “What made you laugh the hardest today?”
- Or even, “What made you the angriest today?”
- Compliment your children on something they did and ask where or how they learnt it.
- Ask them if they could be in a video game for the day, which one would it be and why.
- You could even randomly ask what they are thinking about.
- This one is also very important to get to know your child. Ask “Have you made any new friends today?”
- This is perhaps the easiest and most effective, ask what things they would like to do for the day or have done so far.
