Extinction precisely means animals dying out completely, now it can mean a particular species dying out completely or many animals of various species dying all out. The animals which are at the risk of extinction are called Endangered. Now there are many Critically Endangered animals in our country such as, Bengal Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Smooth coated Otter, Hollock Gibbon, etc. Some Extinct animals in our country are Wild Buffalo, Indian rhinoceros, Striped Hyena, Wolf, Swamp Deer, etc.
As human populations increase, more and more space is needed for Urbanisation i.e. forming towns and cities, and more and more people living in central areas. Construction projects are pushing animals out of areas where generations of their ancestors have lived their whole lives. Forest and swamp habitats are especially threatened. Trees are cut down for home and business construction projects, and swamps are filled in so that neighbourhoods can expand as the number of people continues to live in certain areas. Since the animals are being driven out of their homes, they get deprived of shelters and are forced to face extinction.
To prevent the extinction of animals because of their loss of habitat, humans have to become more conscious of animal populations when considering building and expansion projects. We should keep out of the integrated animal habitat as much as possible. For example, we can move construction projects to places which do not consist of diverse animal habitats and leave out the forest areas.
Another major cause of endangerment for animals is overhunting. The practise of shooting animals as a sport, or to harvest a desired resource from a certain animal can quickly bring the animal’s extinction. This is a world-wide problem, so the governments of countries around the world must unite to agree on laws that control which animals people are allowed to hunt, and that prevent such hunting if animal population numbers drop too low.
There is still hope for animals that are already on the endangered species list. For examples, awareness programs can be held to increase awareness about animals that are endangered. Some organisations are working hard to recreate habitat for endangered animals, and start breeding programs to help animal populations increase. We should all help in the preservation of forests and jungles since they are the prime habitat of most people worldwide. Besides, oceans and seas are home to a large number of animals as well and we should help preserve them as well. We all have to be aware and think before we act. The things we do can affect more than just ourselves.
