Have you ever seen a candle on water? Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Strange or not, today we will teach you how to make a candle on water….!!

Things you’ll need:

  • One candle
  • A piece of clear plastic
  • Soybean oil
  • Water
  • A glass

How to make it:

  • Cut the piece of clear plastic like a cap of a bottle.
  • Make a small hole at the centre of this piece of plastic
  • Now cut the candle completely to obtain the wick. Insert this wick into the hole we made on the piece of plastic.
  • Fill 2/3 parts of the glass with water and pour soybean oil to fill the rest.
  • Now gently place the piece of plastic on the glass.
  • Finally, light the wick and wait.

You might assume that the fire will go out after sometime. But that won’t happen. This wick will burn for a long time while floating on water.

Congratulations! You have succeeded on making a candle on water.

How it works?

Oil and water never mix. Oil simply floats on water because it is comparatively less dense than water. So, between two liquids, the denser one will always be under the lighter one.

The heat from the fire melts the wax and creates a wall around the wick. Wax repels water molecules and attracts oil molecules due to its molecular structure, that’s why the wick doesn’t get wet and burns for a long time.
